When I set up my ps4 i didnt use the same account as my ps3 because wasnt really thinking. Now however upon the release of rise of iron i will need all my character and items from the ps3.

So the plan was to get ps plus on the ps3 account when it runs out so i can then play rise of iron on that. The other issue is, i have other games that i want to play for a bit on that account before switching to the other. I understand that the gear will not be left behind and as you say will be transfered over to the ps4 on the ps3 account. What i really need to get is, if i play on the ps4 account while i waiting for rise of iron, when i go onto the ps3 account, that playing on the ps4 before account wont have affected the items and gear, so effectively they are kept seperate? thanks for the help so far. Forgot to mention as well since your ps+ sub is being shared on the ps4 your ps3 account (on the ps4) will have access to your ps+ games while the sub is active and also access to all games you've bought meaning you don't have to be on you new ps4 account to play any of your games.
